Henri's Shows off his Eco-Dog House

This Eco-Doghouse, designed by Matthew Coates of Coates Design Architects, was built of 100% overage from construction projects, utilizing materials that may have otherwise gone to landfills.   And, since this doghouse was built with sustainability in mind, it is arguably one of the healthiest indoor living environments built for a dog.

Because all materials used for this doghouse are non-toxic, Henri (Matthew’s Great Dane) won’t have to worry about doggie asthma, dermatitis, allergies, skin infections or other health issues that may generate from utilizing toxic products. This unique eco-dog house has FSC siding, thermal heated concrete floors and a vegetated roof.   The house is well ventilated and situated with a window facing Matthew’s desk, allowing Henri to have a line-of-sight to his favorite person on earth.

Coates Design Architects has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the international Cradle to Cradle (C2C) award, LEED Platinum certificate for the Ellis Residence, New Edge - New Blood Award (AIA) and honorable mention at the FSC awards in Chicago.  The team is currently designing the Bainbridge Art Museum and Island Gateway Project, as well as several custom homes and remodel projects.  Construction of the Eco-Doghouse by PHC Construction.

Matthew Coates, AIA, LEED AP is featured speaker this weekend at the
Bellevue Homes and Lifestyles Show.

The Bellevue Homes and Lifestyles Show is taking place at Meydenbauer Center this weekend, January 21 – 23.  Matthew Coates, Coates Design Architects, is featured speaker on Friday, January 21 at 5:00 pm, and again on Saturday, January 22 at noon.  The title of Mr. Coates’ talk is Leading the Way Toward a Sustainable Future.

Synopsis of Leading the Way Toward a Sustainable Future:

Climate changes have dictated changes in the housing industry.

Mr. Coates reveals that houses are energy hogs.  Buildings consume (80%) of total energy used in the US.  This does not have to be the case, as we now have the technology to design and build homes and buildings that create their own energy, and can even create more energy than they consume.

Matthew Coates launched his firm after he won the international design competition, Cradle to Cradle (C2C).  Since inception, Coates Design Architects have encouraged clients to incorporate sustainable designs into their projects.  Matthew will talk about his personal journey to sustainability, from his hometown of Torch Lake, Michigan to present day. He will explain various systems and designs that can be incorporated into projects.

This motivational speech is inspiring and educational, and Matthew has given this speech several times, at Town Hall in Seattle with Ed Begley, Jr. and in Japan to developers and building suppliers.  Matthew has created a power point presentation to accompany this talk, featuring the Ellis Residence on Bainbridge Island (LEED Platinum.)  At the end of the day, everyone can make a difference if they will start with the small things (like switching to LED lights) and embrace bigger changes as their budgets allow.

In addition to his public speaking engagement, the Coates Design Architects team will be exhibiting in booth S9, (in the sustainable section of the trade show)  with staffers on hand to answer questions about sustainable design and green building techniques.

During Greenbuild, the FSC-US announced Coates Design Architects as Honorable Mention in its annual competition celebrating the use of FSC-certified wood in building projects.

Two winners were selected in this National Competiton, and Coates Design Architects earned Honorable Mention.

Coates Design Architects was pleased to welcome over 200 people to the AIA Home of the Month Tour on Sunday, November 21.  The first snow of the season arrived on the day of the tour, but the weather did not deter the enthusiastic crowd of architecture fans. Matthew Coates touched ground from Tokyo at 9:00 am on the day of the tour, and was on hand to welcome guests, along with Coates Design staffers Justin Helmbrecht, Bob Miller-Rhees, Amy Shuster, Nate Brantley, Chantelle Hamilton and Liz Gadbois, as well as building contractor Rob Smallwood and staffers Denise Linrothe and Ann Chick.  Also on hand were representatives from AIA and Seattle Magazine.  Many visitors remarked that meeting the architects and builders, and viewing the intricate design and craftmanship first hand was a great experience.   Heartfelt thanks go out to homeowners Tom and Heather Perilstein (AIA Home of the Month) and Earl Dorsey for opening their homes and sharing their process.  Additional thanks go out to AIA and Seattle Magazine for their wonderful coverage of the Perilstein Residence in the November issue of Northwest Home Magazine.
